HIGHLIGHTS: Exceptional Bird Watching Locations of Lake Mattamuskeet, Pea Island, Bodie Island, and Oregon Inlet North Carolina | Guided Birds Walks on Three Days
THE ADVENTURE: Grab your binoculars and your walking shoes for this fun-filled weekend in the Lake Mattamuskeet & the Outer Banks area of NC for some winter bird watching. Our home base for this weekend is Nags Head NC on the Outer Banks. You will enjoy guided birding adventures with trip leaders, Jill Peleuses and Evan Buckland.
DAY 1: When you arrive at Lake Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge at 12:00 pm and get settled in by exploring the visitor's center, the guides will start off your afternoon with a guided birding adventure at Lake Mattamuskeet. Bring a lunch and snacks for our day's adventure. Lake Mattamuskeet is an essential wintering ground for many species of waterfowl, includes thousands of tundra swans and snow geese. We will spend the day birding around the areas of the lake and head to Nags Head for the evening where participants can choose from one of the local restaurants for dinner.
Birds we expect to see on our trip: Tundra Swans, Snow Geese, Pintails, Glossy Ibis, White Ibis, Ruddy Ducks, Red Breasted Mergansers, Northern Shovelers, Blue Winged Teal, Green Winged Teal, Canvasbacks and many more!
DAY 2: Breakfast is provided by the hotel. After breakfast we are off to Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge to explore the refuge, check out the visitor center and see waterfowl and songbirds. Next we will head over to Bodie Island Lighthouse to explore the pond, woods and lighthouse. We will bird watch at Oregon Inlet where we hope to see off shore ducks and shorebirds such as purple sandpipers. As the evening closes, we will return back to the Nags Head area to explore the beauty of the Outer Banks and dine locally.
Birds we hope to see on this day of the trip: American White Pelicans, Purple Sandpipers, Common Eiders, Razorbills, and many more.
DAY 3: Breakfast is provided by the hotel. We will continue our birding adventure by exploring more of the area's wildlife hotspots. We have a more flexible schedule on Sunday: we will consult local birding sources and plan to go where large numbers of birds and/or unusual species have been spotted. We will check out of the hotel at 8:30 and conclude our birding adventure in the afternoon.
Rarities show up every winter in this area of the state. By trip's end, we expect to see 100-120 species.
WHAT TO BRING: Binoculars, field guide, spotting scope (if you have one), lots of clothing layers (temps could be in the 60s or the 30s...you never know in NC!), and basic rain gear for those who want to be prepared for anything. Don't forget to pack your sense of adventure!
GETTING THERE: All participants should drive and meet at Lake Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge visitor's center at 12:00 PM on Friday. We will carpool together around the Outer Banks the next day. On Sunday, each participant will drive their own vehicle to a great birding hotspot where we will conclude the trip. (This location will be selected based on current bird sighting reports.)
ACCOMMODATIONS AND FOOD: We will be staying at Comfort Inn South on Nags Head. We have reserved a block of rooms offering either a sound side view or ocean front view. Breakfasts will be provided by this hotel for hotel guests on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's lunch will be provided by the trip's guides. Guests have the option to choose from local restaurants for dinners.
